- Multiple Sclerosis, no barrier- Michael Boscoscuro
-
Michael Boscoscuro is a 21 year old gentleman who had developed Multiple Sclerosis which is primarily affecting the use of his hands. Michael originally enquired about assistance to gain a job in October 2006 but decided, at that time that he was not ready to make the commitment at that time. Michael commenced a University Course in Commerce in 2006 and is hoping to complete his studies within the next few years.
Michael registered with Workskills Illawarra in January 2007. When Michael was assessed for his eligibility for employment assistance, the Job Capacity Assessor stated in her report: "I do not feel (Michael) is capable of sustained productive work as his disabilities are significant ...." On commencement of service Michael impressed his Employment Consultant, with his enthusiasm and his success with his studies. His disability was assessed by his Employment Consultant as ‘something that could be worked around, rather than be an obstacle for his employment'.
Michael applied for a cadet position with Daley and Co Chartered Accountants in late 2006, and was offered work at the beginning of 2007. It was at this time he called on Workskills Illawarra for their professional assistance to arrange workplace modifications.
As part of ensuring that Michael could perform his job to the degree required, Workskills Illawarra arranged the assessment and purchase of appropriate workplace modifications. Workplace modifications are specialist equipment needed by the person with disability to aid them to complete their daily duties. Since commencing in the job, $4500 has been expended on ensuring Michael has the capacity to carry out the tasks required of him. The most important modification was to provide the "Dragon Naturally Speaking" program to assist Michael with all aspects of his computer work. This is a computer program which allows Michael to speak into a headset and the software translates his spoken word into printed words on the computer screen. Complimentary to this software is the use of a ‘Big Keys' keyboard which aids Michael's ability to hit the correct numbers and letters on the keyboard, if and when necessary. Another important workplace modification is the ‘Ergo rests'. These assist Michael to keep his hands at keyboard height, without any strain on his upper arms.
Further workplace support has occurred since the job started and a number of further modifications have been added through the Commonwealth Government funding provided by the Workplace Modifications Scheme. The aim of all further assistance has been to ensure Michael can carry out his day to day duties at his place of employment.
From all reports both Michael Boscoscuro, and his Manager Michael Quinn, are very happy with the service offered by Workskills Illawarra.
Michael Quinn, a partner in Daley and Co says:We employed Michael as a trainee Accountant and have been impressed with Michael's work attitude and the way he has embraced our work environment whilst coping with MS. He is one of the team.
This outcome is in no small part due to the efforts of Workskills. Workskills have been the singular contact point for us and Michael - assisting with sourcing and installing equipment and software, to assisting Michael in his work tasks.
These services have been delivered efficiently and thoughtfully, without interruption to our operations. We would highly recommend an employer to consider the services offered by Workskills.
